چکیده

Obesity is a medical condition relating to accumulation and storage of excess body fat, predisposing to negative health implications. The fundamental cause of obesity is a simple energy imbalance between calorific intake and calorific expenditure. Sedentary lifestyle and an increase in consumed calories are the main contributors to this increase in weight gain [1]. Such is the tightness of the molecular link between obesity and Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM), some researchers utilize the term Diabesity in reference to both [2]. T2DM, the most common form of diabetes, is characterized by

limiting intracellular enzyme for nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) synthesis starting from nicotinamide [1]. The plasma Nampt levels are reported to have correlation with obesity and obese related metabolic disease, such as Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), cardiovascular diseases [2] and hyperlipidemia [3] due to association with lipoprotein and cholesterol. Therefore, sensitive detectio...

Visfatin/PBEF/Nampt: A New Cardiovascular Target?

In the last years, a growing interest has emerged toward understanding the role of adipocytokines in the development of cardio-metabolic complications. Five years ago, visfatin/PBEF/Nampt was identified as a novel adipocytokine. In the context of metabolic disorders, extracellular visfatin/PBEF/Nampt was initially claimed as a potentially beneficial molecule due to its insulin-mimetic and gluco...

Secretion of One Adipokine Nampt/Visfatin Suppresses the Inflammatory Stress-Induced NF-κB Activity and Affects Nampt-Dependent Cell Viability in Huh-7 Cells

Nampt/visfatin acts in both intracellular and extracellular compartments to regulate multiple biological roles, including NAD metabolism, cancer, inflammation, and senescence. However, its function in chronic inflammation and carcinogenesis in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) has not been well-defined. Here we use Huh-7 hepatoma cells as a model to determine how Nampt/visfatin affects cellular su...

Visfatin/Nampt: An Adipokine with Cardiovascular Impact

Adipose tissue is acknowledged as an endocrine organ that releases bioactive factors termed adipokines. Visfatin was initially identified as a novel adipokine with insulin-mimetic properties in mice. This adipokine was identical to two previously described molecules, namely, pre-B cell colony-enhancing factor (PBEF) and the enzyme nicotinamide phosphoribosyltransferase (Nampt). Enhanced circula...

Extracellular Nampt promotes macrophage survival via a nonenzymatic interleukin-6/STAT3 signaling mechanism.

Macrophages play key roles in obesity-associated pathophysiology, including inflammation, atherosclerosis, and cancer, and processes that affect the survival-death balance of macrophages may have an important impact on obesity-related diseases. Adipocytes and other cells secrete a protein called extracellular nicotinamide phosphoribosyltransferase (eNampt; also known as pre-B cell colony enhanc...
